Object focus (OF) ma-verbs
As mentioned before, intransitive ma-verbs are actor focus, and transitive ma verbs are object focus:
intransitive verb = a verb that doesn’t use an object to form a sentence
transitive verb = a verb that needs an object to form a sentence
Ex A: Natutulog siya sa kuwarto.
Show
= She’s sleeping in the room.
Show
Ex B: Nakita niya ang puno.
Show
= She was able to see the tree.
Show
In A the verb is matulog = to sleep, which doesn’t take an object; you can’t “sleep someone or something”. So the verb is intransitive, which means it’s AF. You can also tell by noting the actor siya is ang-form.
In B the verb is makita = to be able to see, which takes an object; you can “see someone or something”. So the verb is transitive, which means it’s OF. You can also tell by noting the object puno is ang-form.
Sometimes the litmus test “can you verb someone or something?” doesn’t work very well, so it’s a good idea to memorize the focus when you learn a new ma-verb.
Formation & Aspect
Same as AF ma-verbs
Usages
To perform an OF action
To be able to do something
To do something unintentionally
To sense something
Ex: Makukuha ni Joe ang pangalan niya.
Show
= Joe will be able to get her name.
Show
Ex: Naalala ko ang numero ngayon.
Show
= I remember the number now.
Show
Ex: Nakita niya ang bahay.
Show
= She glimpsed the house./She was able to see the house.
Show
