Tagalog Grammar Lite Lesson 26 Ma-verbs Actor Focus
to listen to
to be hungry
to be afraid
to be angry
to be delighted
So far we’ve only seen AF verbs, mag and um. Mag and um-verbs only have one focus, but some verb affixes have more than one focus. Ma-verbs are either AF or OF. After discussing formation and aspect, which apply to all ma-verbs, this lesson will cover AF ma-verbs. Next lesson will cover OF ma-verbs.
Ma verbs are formed by placing ma before the root.
Ex: ma + kinig = makinig
Ma verb aspect follows the same rules as mag verbs.
= to be hungry
aspects = nagutom, nagugutom, magugutom
= to bathe
aspects = naligo, naliligo, maliligo
Intransitive ma-verbs are actor focus, and transitive ma verbs are object focus:
intransitive verb = a verb that doesn’t use an object to form a sentence
transitive verb = a verb that needs an object to form a sentence
To perform an AF action
To do something unintentionally
To experience an emotion
Ex: Natutulog siya roon.
= He’s sleeping over there.
Ex: Mahuhulog ang babae!
= The girl will fall!
Ex: Natakot ako sa presidente.
= I was afraid of the president.
Reminder for AF ma-verbs
For all AF verb basic-sentences, actor takes ang-form, object takes ng-form and IO takes sa-form
