Grammar
You’re probably pretty comfortable with mag verbs by now, so it’s time to add a new verb type. Um-verbs are also AF.
Usages:
To perform an AF action
To perform natural actions
To denote becoming something
Some verbs for natural:
Ex: kain
Show
= food;
Show
kumain
Show
= to eat
Show
Ex: bagyo
Show
= storm;
Show
bumagyo
Show
= to storm
Show
Some verbs for becoming something:
ex: ganda
Show
= beautiful;
Show
gumanda
Show
= to become beautiful
Show
ex: laki
Show
= big;
Show
lumaki
Show
= to get big
Show
Many roots have both mag and um verbs. Their meanings are sometimes very similar
ex: maglakad
Show
= to walk;
Show
lumakad
Show
= to walk
Show
ex: magpunta
Show
= to go;
Show
pumunta
Show
= to go
Show
and sometimes very different
ex: mag-alis
Show
= to remove something;
Show
umalis
Show
= to leave
Show
ex: mag-akyat
Show
= to bring something upstairs;
Show
umakyat
Show
= to climb
Show
You may wonder why there are two AF verbs with the same root. A hint is provided by looking them up in the dictionary – their 2nd and third definitions are probably not the same. No worries - with time and exposure you’ll learn which context requires which verb.
Formation
For um-verbs only, the infinitive is the same as completed aspect, as shown in the vocabulary list. The remaining aspects are covered in the next lesson. If a root starts with a consonant, form the um verb by inserting um before the first vowel in the root
Ex: lakad
Show
Show
=> lumakad
Show
Show
Ex: punta
Show
Show
=> pumunta
Show
Show
If a root starts with a vowel, form the um verb by putting um before the root
Ex: alis
Show
Show
=> umalis
Show
Show
Ex: akyat
Show
Show
=> umakyat
Show
Show
Additional Notes
these are AF verbs, so their sentences will have the same ang/ng/sa-forms as mag-verbs
