Chico Buarque is one of the greatest Brazilian artists, everybody knows, but I'd love to tell my own experience finding out how universal he is.
I was around 10 when I first came up with one of his lyrics. The meeting happened in a friend's house, her father introduced it to me through a piano score, a song called "Valsinha" which would traslate "little waltz".
It tells the story of an old couple, you can infer they've been married for a long time, and there's the description of this one day he arrives home (from work) and acts differently, in a passionate fashion, inviting her to dance, treating her like he was falling in love again. In the end, they go to the street to show their happiness, and all the neighbors "understand it" and copy the atitude.
Of course he tells the story in an incredibly beautiful way which I can't translate here. I remember getting really touched and crying out of artistic emotion, and I was only 10! I was only 10 and could understand the emotions of an old couple! This is the power of Art!
